Efficient flood lighting is important as it
serves many commercial and social needs. Primary use of
outdoor lights is for safety & security. However many new
applications have emerged such as city beautification, sports
arena, lighting of historic buildings & monuments as also for
airports, docks/harbours, railways and roads.
Flood light is essentially a combination of a rugged anti-rust
enclosure and a toughened, gasketed glass cover having IP65
degree of protection. Luminaires have efficient optics for
specific photometric performance viz. symmetric, asymmetric or
double asymmetric distribution of flux emitted by lamp.
HPSV lamp is a common light source for flood lighting due to
its efficacy, economy and long life. MH is used where colour
quality is important. Halogen flood light, though not energy
efficient finds use in temporary locations/construction sites/pandal
etc due to its simplicity/low cost and light weight.
